CS 327 - FALL 2002 PROJECT WEBSITE

Meeting 10 - Chat Session

[Sid_] So lets get started
[Sid_] 1) Current Status
[Sid_] Seems like everyone's done a great job with getting Documents updated.
[Sid_] Plus, we got some documents written that I didn't think we would.
[Sid_] So I'm feeling pretty decent about the documentation we've generated this semester.
[Sid_] Hope ya'll do too
[SandraFaust] yes
[jiamei] sure
[_Ross] go team!
[abhaysathe] is this good (past exeprience, sid?)
[Sid_] I'd say we've done a lot better than my first time around.
[abhaysathe] yey!
[Sid_] And that was as an oncampus project
[abhaysathe] oops, no offenese to your first time through.. :)
[Sid_] None taken. I was a slacker back then
[Sid_] Anyway, Next is Implementation Status.
[Sid_] *changes the subject quickly*
[_Ross] HAHAHA!
[Sid_] Ross, Brian and I are working on getting an initial version of dbViZ working
[brians] as of right now, the sql importer is working with connections
[Sid_] That's great!
[SandraFaust] Yey! :)
[abhaysathe] drag, drop table ?
[Sid_] When you get that committed, can you send us a link to the SQL file you're using to test it?
[Dave_] Good job!
[brians] yep, right after meeting here
[SandraFaust] or even better put the file on the web
[_Ross] :) I am the kwitak tsaderach
[Sid_] This probably applies only to Ross... But I want a Code Freeze on Wednesday.
[Sid_] Which means no more commits after that.
[_Ross] cool
[SandraFaust] when are we actually to turn in the project?
[Sid_] That's already cutting it close since we have to handin on Thursday.
[SandraFaust] ok
[Sid_] 24hrs before demo.
[Sid_] So preferably late Wed night.
[abhaysathe] 9:15 thursday night..
[Sid_] Well, yea. I'd like to aim for Wednesday night to maintain a buffer in case of catastrophic failure.
[Sid_] Hate those catastrophic failures...
[abhaysathe] agree
[brians] sourceforge down!!!!!!!!!
[_Ross] never! but you know the app will never run....
[Sid_] No it' not. *does an update*
* Sid_ slaps _Ross around a bit with a large trout
[Sid_] It will too!
[_Ross] ...mmmm....sushi....
[_Ross] *muzzle*
[Sid_] For functionality, I'm hoping we'll have the basic process of: load schema, add table, remove table (and other diagram modifications)
[Sid_] Oh, obviously Start dbViZ and exit dbViZ
[Sid_] jGraph is wonderfully easy to use. =)
[Sid_] *squishes that risk*
[Sid_] Alright, next item. Preparation for Demo.
[Sid_] mmm, installation directions... Ross and I will handle that.
[_Ross] you mean you'll do some!?
[Sid_] We'll just have a tarball of everything. Tell the TA to untar it, do a "cd", and run some script.
[_Ross] hee hee
[Sid_] We can constrain him to using a Sun for the demo.
[Sid_] Specifically, one of the Sparcs in the lab.
[Sid_] Next... Finish implementing... Ok, I already covered that.
[abhaysathe] will you pre-load the app there, just in case..
[Sid_] Good idea. As a last resort.
[Sid_] If Ross does his job right, it won't be needed *winks*
[Sid_] Ok. Familiarity with Documentation...
[Sid_] One of our tasks is to demonstrate that everyone participated and knows what's happening in the project.
[Sid_] And that's the whole point of writing all this documentation.
[brians] we're all pretty well represented on the website
[Sid_] So review the big 2: Software Architecture Doc and Software Development Plan
[Sid_] No, Im saying that ya'll have to prove that you know what's happening.
[jiamei] what kind of questions will TA ask, do you know sid?
[Sid_] That was one thing that went wrong at the first time.
[Sid_] He asked us questions trying to figure out if we just had a few heroes and the rest were slackers.
[Sid_] Back then, we had a hero or two, but the others werent too bad. I want to do even better this time.
[_Ross] I betcha sid wore a cape
[Dave_] With a big S on the back :)
[brians] what about a mask??
[Sid_] No, I wasn't a hero back then. Well, maybe programming, but not on documentation
[Sid_] No mask. Might scare the TA.
[Dave_] you could just go 8)
[Sid_] Nah. =)
[Sid_] Ok. So, everyone, before Friday, read over some docs.
[jiamei] yes, sir
[Sid_] More so we make sure we have a common picture of the system.
[Sid_] And if you have questions, ask! Because answers floating around email will help everyone else.
[abhaysathe] copy all!
[Sid_] Yea.
[Sid_] Next, play with the application.
[SandraFaust] Are we taking the website down and mailing it out?
[Sid_] Another question the TA asked was "has everyone used this before?"
[Sid_] It sucked when we had to say "no"
[abhaysathe] used what ?
[Sid_] the application
[abhaysathe] no problem there, right?
[brians] not here
[Sid_] Its a problem if we have it but our own people haven't even seen it.
[brians] good job on the GUI by the way
[Sid_] danke
[_Ross] und mini danke
[Sid_] So everyone try to run it and play with it!
[SandraFaust] won't happen before thursday
[Sid_] That's fine. As long as it happens before the Demo.
[Sid_] Actually, when we submit the code tree to the TAs, howabout we stick it on the web server and email everyone a link to it.
[Sid_] So everyone can follow the (hopefully) easy directions and run the thing
[SandraFaust] good idea
[Sid_] Course, if you want to do it the right way, get it out of CVS which you all should have setup. =)
[_Ross] *waves warning finger*
[Sid_] Ok... submission to TAs...
[Sid_] Hmm, so we submit both the web site and code tree over handin?
[abhaysathe] as two tars
[brians] i don't get turning in a website, do they not have browsers?
[Sid_] No, well try to make it one tar.
[SandraFaust] we need to test the website links off the site for broken links.
[abhaysathe] brian has a point
[SandraFaust] I kind of already tested tohugh
[Sid_] I want to give them an independent copy.
[Sid_] So they can always refer back to it even when the site goes away
[brians] i hope they look at the actual site though, much easier to deal with now
[Sid_] Well, what should happen is that they untar what we give them
[Sid_] and then point their web browser at the index page that they untarred.
[abhaysathe] oh, our docs are 'docs' can read on sun ?
[brians] i don't think so
[Sid_] You can get apps that will read Word Doc.
[SandraFaust] need to test that
[abhaysathe] better warn ta..
[SandraFaust] it would be silly to have points deduced for broken links
[Sid_] Sandra, Brian, are all the links on the site relative?
[Sid_] Answer is "dunno" I assume.
[brians] i don't think so, will have to check
[SandraFaust] yes, as far as I know, I tested a bit yesterday, had some problems that I fixed
[Sid_] Will either of you have a chance to assure that they are?
[Sid_] Ok.
[Sid_] I'll also look over the HTML
[brians] when are we tarring?
[Sid_] Right after Code Freeze. Wednesday night target.
[SandraFaust] as far as I know the site should be in the good shape, but I'd feel better if somebody else tested too
[brians] if they aren't relative, will get redirected to real site
[brians] won't be broken
[brians] we should still give relative links though
[SandraFaust] right, we agree
[Sid_] Agreed. A good test would be to copy the site to your local drive, then pull your internet connection.
[Sid_] And test the site locally
* _Ross has quit IRC (Ping Timeout)
[SandraFaust] yup
[Sid_] Sandra, Brian, will you two be able to support Ross at Code Freeze?
[brians] some stuff won't be relative (links to other sites), but I guess no way around that
[SandraFaust] when?
[Sid_] Mainly making sure that the web site gets tarred ok.
[Sid_] Wednesday Night
[Sid_] He probably won't need too much help, but I want to make sure he can get help if he needs.
[SandraFaust] sure, no problem (no lord of the rings on wednesday for me ;)
* _Ross has joined #dbvis
[_Ross] sorry sorry...stupid bill gates
[Sid_] He thwarts you even on a Mac, eh?
[Sid_] So, Ross... Sandra will be able to help you when you're packing things up.
[Sid_] Wednesday night.
[_Ross] good goood (I haven't set irc up on my mac yet)
[Sid_] Ahhh...
[Sid_] Oh, Ross isn't seeing LoTR on Wednesday either. So he'll have plenty of time. =D
[_Ross] :)
[SandraFaust] ;)
[Sid_] Ok. Next item. Demo Agenda.
[Sid_] We need to have a rough presentation for the TA.
[abhaysathe] split parts of it ?
[Sid_] That would be very cool.
[abhaysathe] make 8 parts then .. :)
[Sid_] It obviously shouldn't be a long presentation.
[Sid_] I think we should plan a 10 minute presentation, 10 minute demo.
[Sid_] He said 30-45 minutes.
[Sid_] With IRC delays, things'll go slower.
[abhaysathe] oh yes, send him the webchat info, too.
[Sid_] Hmm... I can obviously cover project management. Ross can do architecture.
[Sid_] And I think I need to think about this more. *sighs*
[Sid_] *writes it down*
[jiamei] what can i do here?
[Dave_] Should we focus on how we followed the RUP?
[Sid_] We can do that. How we followed RUP.
[SandraFaust] I can cover parsing
[Dave_] or on dbViZ itself?
[brians] i can maybe help with the dbvis demo
[Sid_] Since the grade is evenly split between process and product
[Sid_] We'll have a demo showing the product, so we should spend a little more time talking about process in the beginning.
[Sid_] Specifically how we used the process in making our product.
[brians] Use Cases we did
[Dave_] go through each phase and the artifacts
[Sid_] We can start with an overview of the iterations we did, then describe each iteration.
[brians] that might be repetitive though?
[Sid_] Iterative, not repetitive.
[Dave_] :)
[Sid_] Seriously, what do you mean, Brian?
[Sid_] =)
[brians] Do we have clear distinctions between iterations?
[Sid_] Pretty clear.
[Sid_] We went through an additional inception phase
[Sid_] because there were several documents we felt needed to be written before moving to Elaboration, that the original Inception didn't do.
[Sid_] We did 2 elaboration phases. The first produced the first slew of documents. We then went through a round of reviews.
[Sid_] In Elaboration2 we revised those documents incorporating those reviews.
[brians] 1 inception, two elaborations
[Sid_] In Elaboration2 we also started most of the work on implementing dbViZ
[Sid_] Well, 2 inceptions total.
[brians] ok, if we describe it way
[brians] that way
[Sid_] I consider that whole HW1 as Inception1
* _Ross has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited)
* _Ross has joined #dbvis
[Sid_] Then when we got the 8 people together and started, that was Inception2
[Sid_] Sandra, Brian, do you two want to come up with some things you might say to describe the SQL parsing?
[SandraFaust] yes, I can talk about the design
[brians] ok, i can describe what we have implemented so far
[Sid_] Ok. Im looking for just 2-3 minutes of stuff to type. =)
[SandraFaust] yes
[_Ross] ok... you guys might want to talk and make the two fit somehow
[Sid_] We don't want to go too low-level.
[SandraFaust] ok
[SandraFaust] we'll come up with a plan
[Sid_] =)
[Sid_] And everyone else... This is probably unnecessary, but you should be able to describe what you did on the project.
[Sid_] Unnecessary because we have to write up those 1-pagers.
[brians] i wonder if they realize we have finals this week
[SandraFaust] probably not
[brians] they should do this stuff the previous week!!!
[Sid_] =)
[Sid_] We'd have much less to show off
[Sid_] Anyway, that's all I have to say. Any questions?
[SandraFaust] we would have the same amont to show if the deadline was last week :)
[Sid_] Well, who knows how much we'd have imlemented by then. *shrugs*
[Sid_] No questions?
[Dave_] none from me.
[SandraFaust] no
[abhaysathe] this is unreasonable to ask, but ross, sid, could you add v 1.1 for gui class diagrams ?
[_Ross] nah...
[SandraFaust] waiting for dinner....
[_Ross] Err.. Sid?
[Sid_] Hmm... I meant to update some of those. Maybe I still will, since I've made some changes.
[_Ross] whew...
[Sid_] On second thought... No, I wont.
[_Ross] you go girl!
[Sid_] No access to Rose before I leave
[brians] don't rip anyone on the 1 pagers
[Sid_] =)
[Sid_] *grins evilly*
[Sid_] Ok... Summary: Read docs. Ask questions if you have any. Play with dbViZ
[Sid_] Meeting's done. See ya'll on Friday.
