Session Start: Mon May 12 20:55:58 2003
Session Ident: #dbviz
[20:55] * Now talking in #dbviz
[20:56] <Sid> Hi
[20:57] * brians has joined #dbviz
[20:59] <brians> hey all
[20:59] * Sid waves
[21:00] <Sid> Everyone here awake?
[21:00] * larknox has joined #dbviz
[21:00] <Sid> Guess not
[21:00] <Ross> howdy all!
[21:01] <brians> ross is now
[21:01] * Sid slaps SandraFaust around a bit with a large trout
[21:01] <Sid> Ok whatever. We start now.
[21:01] * Ross sets mode: +o Sid
[21:02] <Sid> Umm, end of Transition iteration. Soon at least.
[21:02] <Sid> We've got the Installation stuff pretty good
[21:02] <Ross> yay!
[21:02] <SandraFaust> hey that hurt!!!
[21:02] <SandraFaust> I'm back
[21:02] <Sid> Hehe
[21:02] <brians> still need a little feedback from larry to fix up page
[21:02] * jrarick has joined #dbviz
[21:03] <Sid> Yea, and we need the instructions for how to create those installations updated, Larry
[21:03] <larknox> Yes - I need to experiment more to come up with generic instructions
[21:03] <larknox> ok
[21:03] <Sid> How much more experimentation you need to do?
[21:03] <Ross> we also need to make sure that the cvs stuff is removed from the installation
[21:03] <larknox> Removed CVS stuff
[21:03] <Ross> nice!
[21:04] <Ross> did you get rid of the cvs user info from the setup scripts?
[21:04] <Ross> ...I guess that doesn't actually matter too much
[21:04] <Ross> might be nice to leave in
[21:04] <larknox> Setup scripts?
[21:04] <brians> can i still update from cvs and setup that way?
[21:04] <Sid> It would be wonderful if this stuff could be integrated into the build.xml...
[21:04] <Ross> setup.bat/userSetup.bat setup.csh/usersetup.csh
[21:04] <larknox> I'm not sure whether your experience (Sid) with the unix installer applies to all the ones ending in .bin?
[21:05] <Sid> Yes, Brian. That method should never change.
[21:05] <Ross> hmmm... I think I remember someone having an ant book
[21:05] <larknox> Ah - those setup scripts.
[21:05] <Sid> Larry, isn't there any documentation with InstallAnywhere that says what kind of instructions you need to provide users?
[21:05] <Ross> you know what, don't bother changing them
[21:06] <larknox> That raises the question again of whether to include all files or not - e.g. ant.
[21:06] <larknox> Not sure- will check that.
[21:06] <Sid> For the installation, users don't need the source even.
[21:07] <larknox> I've included the bin directory for the sql example files.
[21:07] <Sid> If they want the source, they can use CVS.
[21:07] <Ross> true enough... We could have a separate source download also
[21:07] <Ross> ...or they could use cvs :)\
[21:07] <Sid> Oh... Almost forgot... We need to make sure the Javadoc on the web site is up to date too
[21:07] <Sid> Do we even have a link to the javadocs?
[21:08] <brians> off of the new site, no - old one yes
[21:08] <Sid> That's good nuff. Just need to make sure it's updated.
[21:08] <larknox> Then the setup files don't need to be in the bin directory, and there might be a better name for where those sql test files reside.
[21:09] <Sid> Well, if you're going to make changes, make sure they're reflected in the CVS tree too.
[21:09] <Sid> So if you're moving the SQL files somewhere, they should get stuck in a samples directory or something.
[21:09] <larknox> If you download the non-VM installer do you have to install a Java VM or just the JRE and setup the environment?
[21:10] <Sid> You have to have a JVM installed. The JRE is a Java VM.
[21:10] <larknox> ok
[21:10] <Sid> And on most installations of the JVM, it should setup its environment already.
[21:10] <Ross> for compilation you'll need the sdk, for running just the jre
[21:10] <Sid> Ross, how well is the Mac JVM setup? Did it do JAVA_HOME and the PATH?
[21:11] <Ross> it's in path
[21:11] <Ross> *checks java_home
[21:11] <Ross> doens't do java_home
[21:11] <Sid> I assume that InstallAnywhere is smart enough to look for JAVA_HOME and in the PATH to find installed JVMs.
[21:12] <Sid> Maybe other tricks too.
[21:12] <Ross> I don't know if it'd need it on the mac since java is in the path by default
[21:12] <Ross> they only reliance on java_home we have is ant's
[21:13] <Sid> Yea
[21:13] <Sid> Anyway, Larry, how much more experimentation do you need to do?
[21:15] <Ross> Larry.notify()
[21:15] <larknox> It depends if the InstallAnywhere docs have the answer to my questions about the non-windows installers -you've already answered the Vm vs no VM question.
[21:15] <Sid> hehe
[21:15] <Ross> I can test out the solaris and mac stuff tomorrow
[21:15] <Sid> I figure Wednesday's the deadline for everything.
[21:15] <Sid> Anyone know how the TA's plan to evaluate the stuff?
[21:15] <brians> as well as a little test
[21:16] <Ross> clueless
[21:16] <Sid> Yea, wonderful.
[21:16] <Ross> there was a class discussion question
[21:16] <larknox> The windows .exe file is trivial to install. If you can tell me how solaris and Mac installs went that may pretty well take care of the instructions
[21:16] <Ross> the TA's said they should finilize it any day now
[21:16] <Ross> sure thing
[21:16] <Ross> sure thing larry
[21:17] <larknox> The remaining issue would be how to packeage the readme file in the install file.
[21:17] <Sid> What do you mean "package"?
[21:18] <larknox> If I add it to the windows version you won't wee it until it's already installed.
[21:18] <Sid> Include a copy in both the installation and the web page.
[21:18] <Sid> Or wherever it's downloadable from.
[21:18] <Ross> add a releas notes column
[21:18] <Sid> Actually, we might want to set up the installers as File Releases.
[21:18] <Sid> I found out that those have no quota restrictions, unlike our web space.
[21:19] <Ross> It's easy to set up
[21:19] <Ross> ...well, once you have the file that is
[21:19] <Sid> And you can have the readme's there too.
[21:20] <Sid> There've been 37 downloads of v0.3?...
[21:20] <Ross> :)
[21:20] <Ross> someone likes us
[21:20] <larknox> So the download page would have a release notes column containing the readme files with instructions.
[21:20] <Sid> That your fault Ross?
[21:20] <Ross> nope
[21:20] <Ross> only downloaded each once
[21:20] <Ross> (for testing)
[21:20] <larknox> I will also include them inside the installer,
[21:20] <Sid> Yea, Larry
[21:20] * Sid nods
[21:21] <brians> ok, send the readme's and I shall link
[21:21] <larknox> And they'll be checked in somewhere.
[21:21] <larknox> will do.
[21:22] <Sid> Finally, Larry, in your copious amounts of free time =) can you update the instructions you wrote telling us how to create these installers?
[21:22] <larknox> yes.
[21:22] <Sid> Once we get those, we can offload the work of creating those installers to someone else.
[21:22] <larknox> After the readme files, ok
[21:22] <larknox> or perhaps befoe
[21:22] <larknox> before.
[21:22] <Sid> =)
[21:23] <larknox> Actually creating the installers is not difficult - they are all created at once.
[21:23] <Ross> sweet
[21:23] <Sid> Oh, ok. Then you can do that too!
[21:23] <Ross> :) haha
[21:23] <Sid> Kidding
[21:24] <larknox> However, if the readme files differ, it will require creating them seperately.
[21:24] <Sid> Well, I'd be fine with setting up one big readme that covers different OS's
[21:24] <Ross> Well, we could have just one readme with sections for each os
[21:24] <larknox> Although if I create one readme file with different - exactly .
[21:24] <Sid> Hehe
[21:24] <Sid> Echo?
[21:24] <Ross> ...I should just shut up
[21:25] <Sid> So there's no need to set up multiple readme's if we make just one.
[21:25] <larknox> and one link on the download page - eh.
[21:25] <Sid> =)
[21:25] <brians> maybe mutiple readme's can be post 329!!
[21:25] <Sid> Anyway, if you need help with things, Larry, ask.
[21:26] <brians> what is the java install for?
[21:26] <larknox> OK. Oh are ther any more changes coming?
[21:26] <larknox> The java install is a jar file
[21:26] <Sid> Anything, Brian. But it's not as friendly and capable as the platform specific ones.
[21:26] <Ross> I'm done with the code for now
[21:26] <brians> i see
[21:26] <Sid> I think we can do a code freeze now. I don't think anyone's working on bugs anymore.
[21:27] <Sid> Ross, do that LGPL header insert and then the release, please
[21:27] <brians> i was actually working on on cascade delete tomorrow, just kidding
[21:27] <Sid> Actually, Brian, could you update that bug with the status?
[21:27] <Ross> I'll get that done tomorrow before 11:00
[21:27] <brians> i can do that
[21:27] <Sid> And close it.
[21:27] <Ross> Larry, could you wait till noonish till you cut the new installs?
[21:28] <Sid> Since we're not going to be the ones fixiing that bug.
[21:28] <brians> yep
[21:28] <larknox> Sure - just give me a heads up when you're done?
[21:28] <Ross> Will do
[21:28] <brians> unless one of us joins apache too
[21:28] <Ross> *goes to set his alarm early*
[21:28] <Sid> No thanks. I'll stick with this project. =)
[21:29] <larknox> I probably will create the installs in the evening and upload them overnight
[21:29] <larknox> it takes a while
[21:29] <Ross> gotcha
[21:29] <Sid> Larry, let's use the Release system?
[21:29] <larknox> We aer limited to 100MB
[21:29] <larknox> ?
[21:29] <Sid> Actually, Larry, how fast is your connection?
[21:30] <larknox> I think it's just 128k upload
[21:30] <Sid> Ok. Just making sure it's somewhat fast.
[21:30] <Sid> Ross, can you walk Larry through the upload process to Files?
[21:30] <larknox> Ok, so check them in somewhere?
[21:30] <Ross> sure thing
[21:30] <Sid> Then we won't have a quota problem.
[21:30] <Sid> It's part of Sourceforge
[21:30] <Sid> http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=64192
[21:31] <Ross> Larry what we'll do is upload them to sourceforge with my files and then have the websight link to those releases
[21:31] <Sid> A special group of servers that are meant for handling large files and heavy download traffic
[21:31] <Ross> it's pretty straightforward... though easy to get junk
[21:31] <Ross> I'll send you easy instructions tomorrow
[21:31] <Sid> I think I need to make you an admin...
[21:31] <Ross> yeah you will
[21:32] <Ross> or, he can post the files to their ftp server and we'll just have to set them up
[21:32] <Ross> that might be easier actually
[21:32] <Ross> all he'd have to do is ftp em
[21:32] <Sid> I think that'll do it.
[21:32] <larknox> I vote for that!
[21:32] * Sid makes Larry a "release technician"
[21:32] <Ross> :)
[21:33] <Ross> do we need to call him Sir now?
[21:33] <Sid> Whatever. I don't care how you do it. You two handle it. =)
[21:33] <Sid> We don't call you 'sir', Ross
[21:33] <brians> like on wall street? sir larry?
[21:33] <Ross> you don't??
[21:33] <Ross> sniffle..
[21:33] <Sid> Next..
[21:33] <Sid> I guess we'll find out later whether we need to meet for Danny's review.
[21:34] <Sid> Rather annoying we haven't heard anything...
[21:34] <jrarick> Did you for the first semester?
[21:34] <Sid> Hopefully we can just point him at our new web site and be done with it.
[21:34] <jrarick> We did not in my project
[21:34] <Sid> Yea. We had a different TA
[21:34] <jrarick> OK
[21:35] <Sid> Mmm... Next is test cases. If you can do em, please do.
[21:35] <Sid> Schoudel, they should end up on the Documentation page, if you haven't gotten to em already.
[21:35] <Sid> If the TA's are even going to look there... *mumbles*
[21:35] <SandraFaust> I did the test case for Windows installer, btw
[21:35] <brians> ok, i was going to have uday add them since he had his own but haven't heard from him
[21:36] <Sid> As long as it gets done
[21:36] <Sid> Hmm, guess I never emailed my test cases to you.
[21:36] <Sid> I'll do so.
[21:37] <Sid> Ok, anything else?
[21:37] <SandraFaust> if there are any test cases that any one of you can't write, let me know, I'll write them
[21:38] <Sid> And if you need help with web stuff, Sandra seems to have time, Brian. =)
[21:38] <SandraFaust> yes, I was going to say
[21:38] <SandraFaust> I can post them too
[21:38] <brians> i should be ok, unless she wants to post her testcase stuff
[21:38] <brians> and rekindle her former webmaster role
[21:38] <SandraFaust> i can do that, no problem
[21:39] <Sid> Hmm...
[21:39] <Sid> Sandra, could you update that Project page Roles list?
[21:39] <Sid> It's a little obsolete.
[21:39] <SandraFaust> yes, I'll need the roles though. :)
[21:40] <Sid> Pretty much Designer and Implementor-Integrator should have everyone.
[21:40] <brians> i can do it if she is posting test cases
[21:40] <Sid> Tester should have... Oh hell, everyone.
[21:40] <Sid> I think that'll be good.
[21:40] <brians> and don't forget release technician
[21:40] <Sid> Hehe, ok. Ross and Larry are release techs
[21:41] <Sid> I'm a recorder.
[21:41] <SandraFaust> :) gotcha
[21:41] <Sid> And a Code Reviewer
[21:41] <brians> sandra, i'll forward uday's test cases
[21:41] <Ross> me too!
[21:41] <Sid> Any other topics?
[21:42] <SandraFaust> thanks
[21:42] <Sid> Ok, then I guess we're done. Thanks all for being in the group! We ended up with a very cool program.
[21:42] <SandraFaust> thank you. :)
[21:43] <jrarick> Thanks!!
[21:43] <Sid> If we don't chat again, I'm glad to have bossed you around. =)
[21:43] <SandraFaust> btw, I installed it at work and will indend to use it :)
[21:43] <brians> thanks
[21:43] <Ross> Wish you all could see it with some of the militarty databases we have at work.. the app rules!
[21:43] <Sid> And at the least, Ross and I will continue working on it.
[21:43] <SandraFaust> :)
[21:43] <larknox> Thanks!
[21:43] <brians> i can work in some capacity
[21:43] <Sid> If you want to work on it, you're certainly welcome
[21:43] <Ross> Let's be geeky and make it awesome!
[21:43] <SandraFaust> I need SQL Server importer, might wirte that soon
[21:44] <SandraFaust> :))
[21:44] <Sid> It should be very easy to set it up for more databases.
[21:44] <SandraFaust> yes
[21:44] * Sid crosses fingers
[21:44] <brians> see ya
[21:44] * brians has quit IRC (Quit: )
[21:44] <Sid> Bye everyone! Good luck on the exam
[21:44] <SandraFaust> and I already have the code to explore metaschema
[21:44] * jrarick has quit IRC (Quit: )
[21:44] <Ross> good luck all!
[21:44] <SandraFaust> bye bye, it was fun working with you
[21:45] * Ross has left #dbViZ (Client exiting)
[21:45] * Disconnected
