* Now talking in #dbvis
[Ross_Sid] you guys realize we only have about 20 days for our papers..scaru
[SandraFaust] Ross_Sid? Are you guys together?
[SandraFaust] yes, I'm at page 110
[Ross_Sid] Brian is actually on the phone with me
[SandraFaust] ok
[Ross_Sid] He can't be here tonight becuase his house burned down
[Ross_Sid] he has no computer and has no stuff
[SandraFaust] :( yikes
[jianmei] soory to hear that
[_Dave_] is Sid okay?
[SandraFaust] yes, is he ok?
[SandraFaust] what happened?
[Ross_Sid] well he's kinda bummed
[Ross_Sid] fire
[Ross_Sid] burning
[Ross_Sid] badness
[brians] i dont blame him
[Ross_Sid] so here's the deal:
[SandraFaust] :( I'm so sorry
[Ross_Sid] He can't really do very much right now
[SandraFaust] anything we can do?
[Ross_Sid] there are a whole lotta papers that the manager needs to be doing unfortunately
[Ross_Sid] He doesn't mind keeping the role, but for the next few weeks, would you guys mind helping with the documentation
[jianmei] sure
[SandraFaust] is there a list somewhere? we can pick up
[_Dave_] nope, lets just split it up
[SandraFaust] of course
[brians] split it up
[SandraFaust] yes
[Ross_Sid] here's what we need:
[Ross_Sid] iteration plan for the current iteration
[Ross_Sid] and a draft for the next one
[Ross_Sid] also, has anyone reviewed the other documents?
[_Dave_] I've reviewed the Vision Doc and Sid's main doc.
[brians] abhay and I will be working on the use case writeups
[jianmei] do we need wirte review documnet?
[_Dave_] I've just been e-mailing suggestions
[jianmei] i can wirte soem other use case left.
[Ross_Sid] no, but we do need to keep adding to the existing ones
[Ross_Sid] however, who wants to write the iteration plans??
[brians] abhay and i will discuss this week
[brians] use cases.
[_Dave_] I'll take the iteration plans
[brians] sandra, do you want to start organizing the documentation on the web site?
[SandraFaust] i can take the ownership of existing document to update them
[Ross_Sid] awesome. There are templates on the sight for it
[SandraFaust] yes
[SandraFaust] so if you have suggestions tp the documents, send them my way
[_Dave_] Ross do you want to act as a temporary manager? Should we have a temporary manager?
[SandraFaust] what else needs to be done?
[SandraFaust] he is manager's spokesmen ;)
[brians] papers. ugh!!
[jianmei] agree dave
[Ross_Sid] how did the use case list and model go??
[Ross_Sid] (sid wants to know)
[brians] abhay and i are still in discussion phase, i was awaiting to hear back from sid
[brians] i have my reason now
[jianmei] how many use case left? brian?
[Ross_Sid] ok.. we are going to get things started code wise
[Ross_Sid] here's what's up
[brians] a few
[jianmei] I thought soem people can take the rest document like use case plan etc, others can start design now
[Ross_Sid] Brian and I got a nice compliment on our UML design that we did for homework 2. We are going to use that as the basis for our archecture
[SandraFaust] nice! :)
[Ross_Sid] we covered in depth everything except for the sql importation
[SandraFaust] I would like to look into that
[Ross_Sid] we need a detailed use case for it
[Ross_Sid] ...for the sql file importation
[brians] sandra and i did one for hw 2
[jianmei] did we do it already/ if not i can try
[SandraFaust] have you seen what we did?
[Ross_Sid] cool
[brians] are all of the fully dressed use cases on the website, if not then email to me
[brians] i will organize and append
[Ross_Sid] who needs something to do
[jianmei] me
[SandraFaust] jinmei, do you want to team up with me and tackle that one from where we left with HW2?
[brians] for hw#2 i'm referring
[jianmei] ok
[brians] i'll throw some use cases writeups your way if you want jianmei?
[jianmei] sure
[SandraFaust] thanks
* abhaysathe has quit IRC (Ping Timeout)
[Ross_Sid] Ok, who wants to code up a skeleton of the schema package
[_Dave_] Do we have a class diagram of the schema package?
[Ross_Sid] We'll need it to closely follow the UML diagram which is up on the sight for homework tow
[SandraFaust] what is schema package?
[Ross_Sid] Look at sid and my uml diagrams from homework 2
[Ross_Sid] pretty much the project (without details for the importer) is spelled out there
[SandraFaust] ok
[SandraFaust] thanks
[SandraFaust] what's up with Sonia?
[Ross_Sid] who knows :)
[Ross_Sid] Sid is going to start the "main" coding
[Ross_Sid] I'll be writing up the archeture document
[SandraFaust] ok
[jianmei] souds good
[Ross_Sid] EVERYONE should look at our UML
[Ross_Sid] EVERYONE
[Ross_Sid] it's pretty organized, so it shouldn't be too bad
[Ross_Sid] so who's doing the schema package????
[Ross_Sid] it is a good starter for someone who doesn't have much java experience
[_Dave_] I'll start on it.
[Ross_Sid] it's simple and very laid out already
[Ross_Sid] dave, I thought you were doing the iteration plans
[_Dave_] I am. I'm glutton for punishment I guess.
[Ross_Sid] are you ok with that?
[_Dave_] I didn't say how far I would get with the implementation...
[_Dave_] :)
[SandraFaust] i can take it, but would need to give up documentation updates or SQL importer
[Ross_Sid] make sure that the iteration plan follows the software development plan (might be obsolete by now)
[_Dave_] I can use the Java practice.
[_Dave_] Is the package something that could be split up?
[Ross_Sid] aight Dave, it's in your hands
[Ross_Sid] it could, but it's really too simple to split it up
[_Dave_] k
[Ross_Sid] and it would be tough to compile
[_Dave_] Anything else?
[brians] do we want to set a date for the documenation as motivation??
[Ross_Sid] once that's in place the schema importer package (which Sandra and jianmei are designing) can make them
[Ross_Sid] yup, this stuff should really get done by next week
[Ross_Sid] they are small tasks
[brians] ok
[Ross_Sid] brian, do you have anything to do this week?
[brians] use cases and writeups
[Ross_Sid] cool, if you combine all of the "how-tos" that have gone out over e-mail into a nice indexed web page?
[Ross_Sid] could you combine I meant
[SandraFaust] actaully, that's done
[Ross_Sid] is it indexed and pretty???
[brians] is it off the main page sandra?
[SandraFaust] it on the FAQ page, I forgot to send update
[Ross_Sid] aight...we need it to be perty
[brians] did you use my style sheet?
[SandraFaust] I'm afraid I'm a wrong person to ask for that
[SandraFaust] yes, it's your style sheet
[brians] great thanks
[SandraFaust] http://jdbv.sourceforge.net/FAQ.html
[Ross_Sid] so everyone has something to do...YAY!!! Alright anyone else have some pressing topics??
[_Dave_] Let us know how Sid is doing.
[jianmei] what kind of design documnet we need to wrtie?
[Ross_Sid] (sid is busy conveying his his appologies to all of us for having his house burn down)
[Ross_Sid] that mean bastartd
[Ross_Sid] oh, no...he's appologizing for difficulties
[SandraFaust] :( geez, poor sid
[_Dave_] We should update the risk document :)
[brians] no apology necessary, we're sorry
[Ross_Sid] caused by the fire
[SandraFaust] how did the fire happen?
[Ross_Sid] neighbor
[SandraFaust] :(((
[Ross_Sid] he didn't even invite to his house warming
[Ross_Sid] ...bastard!
[brians] wasn't he moving to, was this the new place?
[Ross_Sid] yup, it burned 3 days after he moved in
[Ross_Sid] fate. huh?
[Ross_Sid] he get's an apt. next week
[brians] he might make guinness
[SandraFaust] was it an appartment or a house, or a condo?
[Ross_Sid] condo
[Ross_Sid] he made the news!
[SandraFaust] :(( just bought it?
[Ross_Sid] yup
[_Dave_] Was he insured?
[Ross_Sid] yeah
[SandraFaust] must have been, still, it's an awful thing
[Ross_Sid] did anyone record this meeting??
[_Dave_] I've got it.
[SandraFaust] thanks
[Ross_Sid] dave you are awesome
[_Dave_] I'll have the minutes and log to Brian and Sandra tonight.
[brians] just send me the html dave, thanks.
[SandraFaust] thanks
[SandraFaust] btw, is anybody else's gradebook funky?
[_Dave_] In what way?
[brians] haven't seen the test yet
[brians] hw #2 was entered a little odd it seemed
[SandraFaust] on the main page, i see only homework, and homework1
[Ross_Sid] if one of you web masters could post who's doin what this week we can hold people acountable and hit them with large trouts if they don't finsih their tasks
[Ross_Sid] LARGE trouts
[_Dave_] I'll put it in the minutes.
* Ross_Sid slaps SandraFaust around a bit with a large trout
* Ross_Sid slaps _Dave_ around a bit with a large trout
* Ross_Sid slaps brians around a bit with a large trout
[SandraFaust] no homework2, i can't see the distribution
[_Dave_] I've only got anchovies to fight with... :(
[Ross_Sid] we done??
[brians] there's good tv on right now.
[Ross_Sid] not anchovies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[SandraFaust] and the total for everything is less that individual homeworks :(
* abhaysathe has joined #dbvis
[Ross_Sid] welcome back abhay
[_Dave_] Mine looked fine the other day.
[_Dave_] Gradebook that is.
[abhaysathe] Thanks for carrying the baton.
[SandraFaust] hmmm, thanks, I'll complain to higher authorities ;)
[Ross_Sid] abhay, hows your java?
[brians] sandra, good job on hw2 by the way
[SandraFaust] What was the trout for Ross? ;)
[abhaysathe] better to good level
[Ross_Sid] awesome
[SandraFaust] thanks, you too, we rock! :)
[Ross_Sid] here's what you are doing
[Ross_Sid] we need an abstract package to handle multiple schema importers
[Ross_Sid] each pluggable importer will extend/implement the interfaces/abstract classes in that package
[Ross_Sid] can you handle it?
[abhaysathe] I coulde define the interface and put it out
[Ross_Sid] that leaves sandra and co. with designing the specific sql file importer
[brians] that'll teach him not to miss the first twenty minutes
[Ross_Sid] muahaha!!
[abhaysathe] sorrry
[Ross_Sid] basically, try to code something up
[SandraFaust] :))
[Ross_Sid] I want to get (and sid does too) some code there
[Ross_Sid] it's fine if it's wrong, that's what iterative development is for
[abhaysathe] sounds like my day job .. ;)
[Ross_Sid] hee hee
[brians] abhay i'll get with you with use cases, maybe even help you with the java
[Ross_Sid] so here's the super important question before we adjourn for the evening
[abhaysathe] brian, did you get time to look up my rather large email ?
[Ross_Sid] What do stick sonia with since she doesn't show up????
[Ross_Sid] I need creativity people!!!!!
[brians] i read it once will read and understand again
[SandraFaust] btw, did she change permissions on the index.html, brian?
[brians] yep, we're back to normal. frontpage is evil!!!
[SandraFaust] good! :)
[abhaysathe] Brain, have a little old style phone conf tomorrow ?
[SandraFaust] yes, once used it, never again
[brians] let me digest first and put something on paper
[abhaysathe] ok, no rush or pressure (just acting out my manager) :)
[SandraFaust] I shoud have some test SQL tomorrow or so.
[abhaysathe] I can start thinking on the interface abstraction based on sandra's sql
[Ross_Sid] no no
[SandraFaust] ??
[abhaysathe] start from the other end ?
[Ross_Sid] abhay, we don't want the top level importer package to be based on sql
[Ross_Sid] sql importation is just one way to get a schema in
[SandraFaust] i just promised last week that I'll provide test SQL for importer, that's all.
[Ross_Sid] the others will be jdbc, or maybe a person entering it in some way
[Ross_Sid] good sandra, we actually do need that
[abhaysathe] So should the abstraction should be a base for rest of the business logic ?
[Ross_Sid] kinda.
[Ross_Sid] The abstraction should provide the framework for all importers to follow
[abhaysathe] makes sense.
[Ross_Sid] the effect being that the rest of the program doesn't need to care which importer is being used
[brians] i'll brainstorm with you Abhay
[SandraFaust] right
[Ross_Sid] the output of you abstraction (and therefore with specific importers) will be the schema clases that _Dave_ is coding up
[abhaysathe] The 'load schema' use case should be a good start for the abstraction then..
[Ross_Sid] tomorrow I'll send out an e-mail detailing what packages go where in cvs
[Ross_Sid] and how to use them
[Ross_Sid] yup
[SandraFaust] yes, which brings me to the point of, shouldn't we need to know it before designing the SQL importer?
[Ross_Sid] on the money
[Ross_Sid] yeah, you do, and no you dont
[SandraFaust] yes, i don't need it for parsing
[Ross_Sid] the end product will need to konw it, but you can begin getting the parsing done, and the concepts done now
[SandraFaust] but would need to know the interface I'm supposed to match
[SandraFaust] right, we agree
[Ross_Sid] Check out our UML diagrams for the basic framwork
[Ross_Sid] yup
[abhaysathe] the interface will look inside, i.e. ,mainly for other parts of package
[Ross_Sid] you on the money too sandra!
[Ross_Sid] collaboration should abound outside of of the meetins
[Ross_Sid] and cvs should/will be used to share the files
[Ross_Sid] Dave, a warning for you, the schema package is kina the bottleneck on the critical path
[_Dave_] Should I put the schema package before the iteration plan?
[Ross_Sid] the sooner you can get that done the sooner we can all start committing some real code
[Ross_Sid] yeah. We can always lie on the iteration plan, isn't that what the prof said :)
[_Dave_] :)
[abhaysathe] I was out, so what's the schemapackage ?
[_Dave_] It's always easier in hindsight anyway :)
[brians] see architecture
[abhaysathe] ok (slaps himself)
[Ross_Sid] schema package basically contains the simple data structurs which get passed around the system
[abhaysathe] you mean the, I was saying would be the heart of the system ? ;)
[Ross_Sid] the main classes in the scheam package are: schema, which is made up of tables, tables, which are made up of rows, and rows!
[brians] tables are made up of columns not rows.
[SandraFaust] rows?
[SandraFaust] ok, that makes more sense :)
[Ross_Sid] I meant columns sorry
[Ross_Sid] and links!
[SandraFaust] ok
[Ross_Sid] (foreign keys) are also important data structures
[brians] basically whatever is need to build the ER diagram
[Ross_Sid] I'll move the gif's of the UML to a nice big obvious spot tomorrow
[Ross_Sid] (or if one of the web admins once to link it...........(I'll e-mail you guys))
[brians] no problem
[SandraFaust] sure
[Ross_Sid] are we done??????
[brians] i am
[jianmei] thanks ross
[_Dave_] See you later. - thanks Ross_Sid
[SandraFaust] yup
[brians] good night
[SandraFaust] thanks
* brians has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited)
[jianmei] say hello to sid
